When a casino owning dog named Charlie is murdered by his rival Carface, he finds himself in Heaven basically by default since all dogs go to heaven. However, since he wants to get back at his killer, he cons his way back to the living with the warning that doing that damns him to Hell. Once back, he teams with his old partner, Itchy to prep his retaliation. He also stumbles on to an orphan girl who can talk to the animals, thus allowing him to get the inside info on the races to ensure his wins。座頭市はヤクザ同士の喧嘩で、朝五郎という百姓に味方する親分の人柄に惚れるが、数ヵ月後に再会した朝五郎は百姓たちを苦しめる悪徳ヤクザになっていた……。三國連太郎が屈折したヤクザの親分役を巧演する。「戦争と人間」（1970～73）、「不毛地帯」（1976）などで知られる巨匠・山本薩夫が演出にあたった一編。。
